Amazon S3 (Amazon Simple Storage Service) is object storage built to store and retrieve any amount of data from anywhere on the internet. Export calendars pro 1 9 2019. It provides a simple web service interface and can be used to build applications that make use of internet storage. Amazon S3 on Outposts delivers object storage to on-premises AWS Outposts environments to meet local data processing and residency needs.
“AWS Outposts customers can now use… S3 APIs to store and retrieve data in the same way they would access or use data in a regular AWS region,” Martin Beeby, a principal advocate at AWS, wrote in a blog post announcing the availability. “This means that many tools, apps, scripts or utilities that already use S3 APIs, either directly or through SDKs (software development kits), can now be configured to store that data locally on your Outposts.”
AWS launched AWS Outposts for general availability last December. The fully managed hybrid cloud service, which includes compute and storage racks built with AWS-designed hardware, extends AWS cloud hardware infrastructure, services, APIs and tools to customers’ data centers, co-location spaces or on-premises facilities for a consistent hybrid experience. It’s designed for workloads that require low-latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing or local data storage. AWS installs the Outposts and manages and updates them.
“Outposts are connected to an AWS (cloud) region and are also able to access Amazon S3 in AWS regions, however, this new feature will allow you to use the S3 APIs to store data on the AWS Outposts hardware and process it locally,” Beeby said.
Customers were requesting S3, according to Joshua Burgin, general manager of AWS Outposts.
“We have EBS, which is block storage, and through our partners, we have both file and object storage, whether it‘s from Qumulo or Pure Storage -- their FlashBlade,” Burgin told CRN last month. “And what people have also asked for is can we add AWS‘ object storage, which is what S3 is. It’s API-compatible, and if you have an application but you’re running in a region that takes advantage of S3 and those APIs to store and retrieve your data, now you can bring that to the Outpost…without re-architecting your application.”
Here‘s a look at five key things to know about Amazon S3 on AWS Outposts.
